Like all living systems, companies and communities that will remain viable in the 21st Century are learning how to adapt to many conditions that have never existed before. We intend to be an active participant in this essential evolution.
Who We Are
The Callaway Group, and its affiliated companies, is an international management consultancy headquartered in Chicago USA. We work primarily, but not exclusively, with leaders and management teams from large organizations in the healthcare delivery sector, and with other knowledge-based human service organizations and educational institutions. We also work with the owners/leaders of privately owned companies, ranging in size from small to large.
Since the company’s inception in 1996, we have dedicated ourselves to helping leaders and their teams solve real-life business problems while developing individual and collective competencies. Through our engagements, we help our clients develop insight into a vexing problem and arrive at a practical course of action. We are equally committed to the deeper, long-term goal of increased internal capacity development within our clients and their organizations.
We are convinced that the best solutions and real innovation emerge when outside advisors with relevant insight and expertise partner with leaders and teams inside the organization with insight into ‘how things are today.’ To that end, we employ our Collaborative Consulting Model™, founded upon the principles of collaboration and self-sufficiency, to help those in charge achieve their business goals through focused, practical engagements.
Our Company’s Continuing Evolution
During our first decade, the Callaway Group perfected its collaborative approach to client engagements. Working with some of the most respected healthcare organizations in the country, we helped our clients further develop integrated delivery systems, create strategic partnerships, and build internal leadership and management capacity. Our firm’s capabilities and reputation as a positive force for change grew. We codified our insights into the qualities of healthy companies into a book about new business start-ups, THE ENERGETICS OF BUSINESS: A Practical Guide for Bringing Your Business to Life.
During our almost four decades of professional activity we also observed how some of our clients fall short of their goals. This happens in spite of favorable external conditions, a highly skilled workforce and well-intentioned leadership. Working closely with leaders and their teams, we have developed insight into the often-unseen forces that create strategic blind spots, organizational misalignment, and disempowered workforces. One of the most common causes of poor performance is the tendency of complex organizations to place technically competent people in leadership positions without ensuring they have an adequate understanding of what effective leaders actually do. Another internal condition that contributes to underperformance and implementation failures is a unique form of fear, a person’s inevitable resistance to change.
Recognizing a pervasive need for more effective leaders, we expanded our services to include formal leadership and management development programs that are now available to clients and in formal academic settings. Our insights into effective leadership are now part of the formal curricula for a Master of Science (MS) in Nursing Policy, Leadership and Management Specialty at the Yale University School of Nursing.
Ms. Callaway’s involvement in international healthcare began in 1994, when, as a Senior Vice President at Sharp Healthcare, she was responsible for international programs that coordinated healthcare and educational programs across the Mexican border. The Callaway Group continues this commitment to global healthcare through our active involvement in training programs that encourage sustainability of healthcare services locally. We have collaborated with several respected educational institutions on three continents to create and deliver practical leadership and management certificate programs in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Ethiopia and Liberia.
We continue to evolve as our clients evolve. In 2008, we are using technology to expand our global reach to individuals and organizations that find our insights and capacity development approaches valuable. We are partnering with ALIVEWORLD, an e-learning platform, to bring our leadership and new business start-up workshops to the Internet.
