NEW BUSINESS START-UPS

One could write at least ten books about what not to do when forming a new company. Instead, I chose to write just one that outlines the steps new business owners must take, from the beginning, to increase their chances of success.

A lifetime spent working inside a dozen companies and consulting to dozens more provides a unique vantage point from which to view the underlying qualities of any organization. If truly paying attention, over time and with practice, one can discern subtle patterns in any company ’s vision, strategy, ongoing operations, relationships with the workforce and leadership behavior. These patterns, what we call ‘business energetics’, often reveal whether an organization is, at its core, healthy— or not. These insights form the foundation of all the Callaway Group’s programs and services.

In 2004, the Callaway Group made a philosophical decision to make these practical insights available to a broader audience. We did not want to have our reach limited by geography or by pocketbooks. We wanted to share our insights with courageous men and women throughout the globe who are working hard to improve local economies by creating new businesses. This is our commitment to bridging oceans and continents by connecting to people and communities through knowledge transfer based on mutual respect.

The first task was to synthesize our understanding into a book that would appeal equally to those with or without formal business training. We completed this first step in 2006 with the publication of THE ENERGETICS OF BUSINESS: A Practical Guide for Bringing Your Business to Life. The book describes the three-part business formation framework that guided the creation of the Callaway Group more than a decade ago and was used by four new business owners that are described in case studies. Since its publication, our framework for new business start-ups has been validated further. Several aspiring business owners who have used THE ENERGETICS OF BUSINESS™ to create new companies in diverse cultures and economic settings. In 2008, we have partnered with ALIVEWORLD™ to publish a companion workbook that will be supported by an e-learning platform. It will be released later this year. In response to adequate demand, we will offer occasional weekend workshops to the public, once the workbook and e-platform are available.

Most aspiring business owners must use their precious resources to pay for start-up expenses, lease a building, buy necessary supplies, hire essential staff and open a new company bank account. Few have extra resources to hire their own new business consultant. Responding to this reality, we are making our insights available cost-effectively.
